I haven’t had an entry in a while. I’ve been busy with other stuff and I just haven’t felt like writing. Anyway, I’m back and I hope to write more entries.
I’m going to discuss something I saw that has been bugging me. Recently I saw a documentary about a landscape photographer (I won’t mention his name). He traveled to several places, many I’m looking forward to photographing. However, overtime he went to make a photograph he would say he was making a gallery shot. For me personally, goes against everything I believe in. One should never assume that every photograph, let alone if one photograph, is going to be a gallery shot (meaning it will be shown in a gallery). For myself the goal isn’t to have my photographs enter a gallery, although when it happens it is great. For me when I make a photograph it’s for my own pleasure first. If I see something pleasing, I make a photograph. Usually my instincts are right and other people find the photograph pleasing as well. Other times this doesn’t happen. In fact, I have had situations where I thought the photograph wasn’t that great but other people thought they were good. Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, art is the same way. It amazes when one photograph could win a contest, yet the same photograph entered in another contest doesn’t receive any acknowledgement. Each critic and viewer is different.
